Getting dressed doesn’t have to be complicated. These three outfit formulas make it simple to create polished looks using pieces you already own. If you’re feeling stuck in a style rut, this will make your mornings so much easier.
Sometimes the hardest part of getting dressed is overthinking it. Instead of trying to reinvent your wardrobe, I love leaning on simple outfit formulas that just work. This week, I’m sharing three easy combinations you can recreate with items already in your closet, no shopping required. From the sandwich method to winter neutrals and easy pattern mixing, these formulas will help you feel put together without the stress.
1. The Sandwich Method + Unexpected Pants
This is one of my favorite styling tricks because it instantly makes an outfit feel intentional. Choose a top and shoes in the same (or very similar) color to “sandwich” your outfit, then add an unexpected pant in between.
For example: a black sweater + black boots with a bold printed pant, colored trouser, or patterned denim. The matching top and shoes create balance, and the unexpected pant becomes the fun focal point. It feels styled, but it’s incredibly simple.

2. Winter Neutrals: Mix Contrasting Neutrals
Neutrals don’t have to mean boring. Instead of pairing the same neutral shades together, try mixing contrasting neutrals for a richer look.
Think camel + black, cream + gray, chocolate brown + ivory, or navy + tan. The contrast gives dimension while still keeping everything cohesive. This formula works especially well in colder months when layering textures like wool, denim, and leather.

3. Pattern Mixing in the Same Color Family
Pattern mixing feels intimidating, but this makes it easy: keep everything in the same color family.
For example, pair a striped navy top with a navy floral skirt, or a plaid coat over a subtle tonal print. When the colors relate, the patterns feel coordinated instead of chaotic. It’s an easy way to elevate your outfit without adding more pieces, just smarter combinations.
